Washing Machine Not Spinning? 7 Causes and What to Check First

The drum fills and washes but won't spin, or the clothes come out soaking wet. These are the seven most common causes, and which ones you can check safely at home.

Quick Answer

A washing machine that fills and washes but won't spin usually has one of seven causes: the lid or door is not closing fully, the drain is blocked, the load is unbalanced, a drive belt has slipped, or the motor, control board or lid switch has failed. Start with the door, the drain and the load, because those are quick to check.

Unplug the machine before you open the back panel or touch the motor.

A washing machine that won't spin leaves you with heavy, soaking wet clothes, and sometimes a machine full of water at the end of the cycle. It's one of the most common washing machine faults we see across Melbourne, and many of the causes are simple to rule out.

Here are the seven causes in the order we'd check them, along with the ones you can look at yourself and the ones that need a washing machine repair technician.

1. The lid or door is not closing properly

Most machines won't start the spin cycle until the door or lid is fully shut and locked. Close it firmly and listen for the click. If the lock doesn't catch, the latch or lid switch may be worn.

2. The drain is blocked

Many machines stop before spinning if there is still water in the drum. Check the drain filter at the front bottom of the machine, and make sure the drain hose is not kinked or blocked.

3. The load is unbalanced

Machines are designed to stop the spin if the load is too heavy on one side, to protect the bearings. A single heavy item, like a bath mat or a doona, can cause this. Spread the load out and run the spin cycle again.

4. The drive belt has slipped or worn (top loaders)

Many top loaders have a drive belt that connects the motor to the drum. A slipped or worn belt can make the drum turn slowly, or not at all. A loud squeal or burning rubber smell can point to a belt problem.

5. The motor or carbon brushes are worn

A noisy motor, a burning smell, or a machine that spins for a second and stops can mean worn carbon brushes or a failing motor. This needs a technician, because the motor is tested and replaced as a unit in many machines.

6. The lid switch or door lock has failed

The lid switch tells the machine the door is closed. If it fails, the machine may fill and wash but never move on to spin. This is a common fault and often a straightforward replacement.

7. The control board has a fault

If none of the above applies, the control board may be sending the wrong signal to the motor. This is the least common cause, and it needs a technician to test it properly.

What's Safe to Check Yourself vs When to Call a Pro

Safe to Check Yourself

  • Unplug the machine before checking anything inside the drum or at the back.
  • Check the lid or door latch and make sure it closes fully.
  • Clean the drain filter and check the drain hose for kinks.
  • Redistribute a heavy or single item so the load is balanced.

Always Call a Licensed Technician

  • Test the lid switch and door lock circuit.
  • Check the motor, carbon brushes and drive belt.
  • Test the control board output for the spin signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it dangerous to run a washing machine with an unbalanced load?▼

The machine's safety system usually stops the spin, but repeated unbalanced loads can wear the bearings and suspension. Spread the load out and avoid running very heavy items alone.

Why does my washing machine fill but not spin?▼

Most often the door is not locking, the drain is blocked, or the load is unbalanced. The lid switch and control board are less common causes.

Can I fix a washing machine that won't spin myself?▼

You can safely check the door, the drain filter, the hose and the load balance. Motor, belt, lid switch and control board repairs need a licensed technician.

Does a washing machine that won't spin always need a new part?▼

No. A blocked drain, a slipped door catch or an unbalanced load are often fixed without any parts. A technician confirms the cause before quoting for a part.
